Manchester United Football Club is one of the most famous and wealthiest football teams in the world and the players are treated as major celebrities. Some of the most Manchester United's most famous players have included David Beckham and Mark Owen. The Manchester United Football Club play regular matches at the Old Trafford stadium and behind-the-scenes guided tours of the stadium are available. Tickets for any of the home matches are hard to come by and should always be booked in advance.

Manchester City Football Club is Manchester's best-supported local football club, although they do not currently enjoy the same success as their rivals, Manchester United. The Lancashire County Cricket Club is the most popular and beloved cricket team in England, although it has not actually won and major championship for many years. Founded almost 200 years ago, Manchester's Lancashire County Cricket Club play many cricket matches during the summer at Old Trafford. Manchester's famous cricket match is the Roses, where the Lancashire County Cricket Club compete against Yorkshire. International test matches are also played at this ground periodically.
